On March 10th 2016, Discovery Wrestling held the excellent ‘Lucha’ event at The Jam House in Edinburgh.
Fatal Four-Way – Lucha DS vs Theo Doros vs Kenny Williams vs Massimo
Four superb talents, one match and what a way to kick off Discovery Wrestling “Lucha”. All four men showed early on exactly what they have to offer to the future of Wrestling as they all excited and dazzled the crowd.
Massimo showed early on and continuously during the match how menacing he is by overshadowing his other competitors with his size and strength. Doros, who made his Discovery Wrestling debut on this night shown throughout the match why he was someone to keep an eye on. Lucha DS also made his debut on this night and hit the fans with his fast paced and high octane moveset that dazzled his opponents. Then there was the ring general, Kenny Williams, of the four men the most experienced and he demonstrated this throughout the match, adapting to each one of his opponents, and gaining the advantage more often that not to please the crowd.
This exciting opening match had to end and it was Lucha DS picking up the win to shock his opponents but fans loved the entertainment brought to them by all four men.
Lucha DS pinned Theo Doros, Kenny Williams, Massimo.
Interim Y Division Championship Number One Contender – Aspen Faith vs Michael Chase
Two of Scotland’s brightest wrestlers battled to get the opportunity to become the number one contender for Y Division Championship.
Michael Chase began this match already incensed by the comments earlier made on social media by Aspen Faith and this was demonstrated clearly when Chase furiously used his strength to overpower “The King of Catch”.
Chase showed all the attributes as why many wrestling promotions believe he is the future of UK Wrestling, using his speed and size, he was quick to show why he believed he should be No1 Contender to the Y-Division Title.
Everything appeared to be in Chase’s favour until the turning point of the match was when Chase looked to have injured his right leg and the technician Faith focused his attack on that vulnerability. Despite valiantly attempting to continue on, Chase fell victim to one of Faith’s many Submission holds, an Inverted three-quarter figure-four leglock to get the tap-out win.
Aspen Faith defeated Michael Chase.
Christopher Saynt vs Chris Renfrew
Interrupting the show, “The Sinner” Christopher Saynt swaggered to the ring, steel chair in hand and demanded to know why he wasn’t involved in the Y-Division Championship match. Immediately Jam O’Malley hit the ring and informed him that while he understands his frustration he had another match planned for Saynt. The lights dimmed and the familiar sound of “Psycho” by Psyko Dalek played, it was the arrival of Chris Renfrew and he wanted to fight.
As the shocked Saynt had to adapt to face the man who has been the heart of “The NAK” in recent years, the crowd were ecstatic in seeing Renfrew in Discovery Wrestling. The match began with Saynt having to withstand a full on assault from Renfrew, not allowing “The Sinner” anytime to get focused on the match, Renfrew pressed on and getting a near-fall. It was this moment Saynt chose to escape the situation by leaving the ring and head to the back until Renfrew caught him and continued the punishment.
It was in the return to the ring that Saynt regained his composure, by allowing Renfrew to push him into the ring first he deviously recovered an assaulted his opponent as he entered the ring afterwards. Saynt continued to demonstrate why he is one of Scotland’s vicious wrestler’s as he punished Renfrew until during the chaos the referee was hit and then showing his calculated side, Saynt seeing the referee recovering slammed the chair off the canvas threw the chair to Renfrew and collapsed to ground appearing that Renfrew struck him with the chair, as the referee looked dumbfounded at what to do, he ordered the match to continue.
However, Renfrew looked to the crowd, chair still in hand, grinned and stuck Saynt with the chair to head as the referee signalled for a D/Q, Renfrew mockingly raised Saynts unconscious arm and then striking him once more with a Pendulum Facebuster on the chair.
Christopher Saynt defeated Chris Renfrew by D/Q.
Interim Y Division Championship – Triple Threat – Lewis Girvan vs BT Gunn vs ‘Killshot’ Shane Strickland
Continued from last month, Girvan and Gunn had a truly fantastic match for the Y-Division Championship until it ended in a DQ win for Girvan due to interference from Chris Saynt whom attacked him with a chair, now as it was announced the two would do battle again but add in the man whom has made a name for himself in Combat Zone Wrestling, recently Lucha Underground and this weekend competing in the prestigious wXw 16 5 Carrat Gold tournament, Shane “Killshot” Strickland to make it a triple threat match.
With the fans divided in this match, and odds against the Champion, the only thing they knew was that this match wouldn’t disappoint and they weren’t wrong. From the start, it was the feud between rival’s Girvan and Gunn that took the focus as the two ignored Strickland, the CZW Talisman joked with the crowd for a moment before interjecting himself into the match.
As all three men fought they all amazed the crowd with their agility and wrestling technicality, especially when Gunn locked Girvan in a standing leglock while at the same time locking Strickland in an abdominal stretch. Not to be outdone Strickland attached Gunn in a crossfire and seeing his Title reign may be at an end, Girvan locked on a crossfire of his own on Strickland to bring cheers from fans. And not to be outdone for action, Strickland while on the apron drove Girvan over his shoulders to throw him hard on the edge of the ring.
The action was non stop as all three men engaged in their own superkick party, striking as swiftly as the could to each one but en route to the finale, Strickland launched himself off the top turnbuckle to strike only to face an excellent standing dropkick by the Champion and this left him to a further onslaught by Girvan covered him to get the pinfall.
Afterwards as Strickland shook the hand of Girvan, Gunn stood on the walkway cursing his missed opportunity and vowing revenge on his opponents. But all three men produced a fantastic match for the Discovery Wrestling fans.
Lewis Girvan defeated BT Gunn & ‘Killshot’ Shane Strickland to retain his title.
After the interval, The “Local Hero” Joe Hendry arrived to the ring, taking the microphone he announced at how dismayed he was at last month’s defeat at the hands of Grado & Tommy Dreamer and he wasn’t leaving the ring until he got the decision reversed and someone be punished for such a travesty to occur.
Within minutes Jam O’Malley confronted the “Local Hero” and he would rectify this injustice on the “House of Hendry”, he admitted that the decision was wrong and he would be reversed the decision.
It didn’t end there, as with Hendry’s insistence, O’Malley suspended the referee responsible for the count for the rest of the evening. Hendry wasn’t done, as compensation for the trials that he had suffered he demanded that Lewis Girvan to be stripped of the Interim Y Division Championship and for him to be made champion. This was when O’Malley drew the line, refusing that request he placed Hendry in a four-way match held on April 10th with “Hendry’s son” Lou King Sharp and two other competitors still to be announced, with the winner getting the chance to become No1 contender to the Interim Y Division Championship.
‘Iron Man’ Joe Coffey vs Angelico
The crowd was divided in who to cheer for as both wrestlers are equally talented and so well respected in the wrestling industry. The battle began with both men attempting a test of strength and Coffey getting the best of the situation, however Angelico used his speed to build up momentum to get into the match until Coffey slowed the pace down by working over the Lucha star’s back by using a Boston Crab.
As the match processed the two men continued to excite the crowd as Coffey struck with his running splashes into Angelico as he was trapped in the corner and Angelico would manage demonstrate his raw power to strike with a Rack Bomb.
The superb match ended when Angelico tried to capitalise on a weakened Coffey by hitting his finisher only to fall pray to not one but two brutal discus forearms for the pin. As the two men stood in the ring, respect was earned as the two shook hands to the rawr of the crowds for both men.
‘Iron Man’ Joe Coffey defeated Angelico by Pinfall.
Coffey afterwards seized the microphone and demanded that after everything he had sacrificed, every match he had won against big name stars in Discovery Wrestling he had earned a Title shot against Y Division Champion Lewis Girvan.
After spurring the attempts by Jam O’Malley to calm the “Iron Man” down, he called on Discovery Wrestling management to make the decision. Management representive Alan Smith, announced he wouldn’t get his Title shot as there was something else he had planned for him, as Coffey looked to erupt that he may have been passed over in a Title shot again, Smith announced, April 10th, Jay Lethal will at Discovery Wrestling and Coffey will challenge him for the ROH World Championship erupting in loud cheers for the mighty wrestler Joe Coffey.
Lucy Cole vs Sammii Jayne (w/ Debbie Sharpe)
Next it was “The Bae Club” (Sammii Jayne with Debbie Sharpe) in action, who in Discovery Wrestling has established themselves as a dominant force in the Women’s Division but on this night they would be facing one of PBW’s most brightest stars, Lucy Cole.
As the match began, Cole was quick to let Jayne make her own mistakes in the early going as Jayne took a tumble, not once but twice through the ropes as Cole sidestepped her opponents furious dives at her. The crowd cheered as they sensed that Cole had control of the match, but those same cheers turned to jeers as thanks to the distraction by Sharpe the tide had turned.
But to Cole’s credit with every assault Jayne used wither it was running splashes into the corner or the back suplex linking into a pinning bridge attempt, Cole would use her resiliency to continue.
The ending of the match occurred when Sharpe (who was channelling her inner Sensational Sherri or Melina because her interaction with the crowd was entertaining throughout) prepared to grab the leg of Cole who was standing on the ring apron looked who in turn looked to fall prey to Jayne who was in the ring until she countered her position and the two swapped positions, when a distracted Sharpe seized the leg of Jayne who hadn’t seen the switch allowed Cole to strike an pin the superb Jayne in a hard fought match.
As Cole soaked up with cheers from the appreciative crowd, the mood was stormy in the “Bae Club” as Sammii Jayne was clearly angered by her best friend’s accidental interference that cost her the match.
Lucy Cole defeated Sammii Jayne (w/ Debbie Sharpe) by Pinfall.
‘The Beast Of Belfast’ Damo vs “King Puma” Ricochet
What do you get when you mix one of the best Heavyweight wrestler’s on the UK with one of the most dynamic talents in the world? The answer, a perfect mix of comedy and damn excellent action.
From the start the two men played it for laughs as Ricochet attempted to lift Damo and then in alternative method to take the big man down, stamp on his feet, both attempts had failed that brought the response of, “C’mon son I wasn’t born yesterday” from Damo as Ricochet looked to crowd with a sly grin.
The match progressively moved faster as the crowd were continuely entertained throughout with Ricochet who managed to get Damo off his feet and trapping him in the corner as he then began pressing the advantage with a flurry of vicious stomps but the action again played for subtle laughs as Ricochet appeared to get carried away with his attack and stomped a full 360 degrees hitting nothing as he did it. This brought cheers from the fans and rightfully so.
As the main event continued the battle was in full swing as the comedy took a backseat while the two wrestler’s showed exactly why they are equally respected all over the world, from Damo hitting his back splash and his relentless attempts to connect with the ‘Ulster Plantation’ to Ricochet using his world renowned high flying skills and even lifting Damo on his head in an amazing feat of strength to gain nearfalls. However the finale of the fantastic match ended when Damo eventually weakened Ricochet enough to hit his ‘Ulster Plantation’ to get the Pinfall. Afterwards, Damo went to take his combatants hand and thank him for the match but in an uncharacteristically move Ricochet stormed off until returning very shorty afterwards with a smile of respect for “The Beast Of Belfast” as he joined him in the ring with a hug.
After the match the excitement didn’t end there as Damo stood alone receiving the rightful cheers from the crowd, Dave Conrad whom Damo defeated last month was watching with a look of utter disgust, this turned to action as he struck the main eventer as he walked past and the two engaged in a vicious pull apart brawl safe to say it isn’t over between the two men.
‘The Beast Of Belfast’ Damo defeated Ricochet by Pinfall.
