Hello, and welcome to a new little series where I take you through my top 10 favourites. To start off, I thought I’d start with a simple topic so today we’re looking at my top 10 favourite wrestlers in Scotland.
10. Shawn Johnson
For those that don’t know about Aberdeen based WrestleZone, then you most likely won’t have heard about Shawn Johnson. In my opinion, he is an extremely underrated talent. Every time he steps in the ring you know you’re in for a treat. Having recently turned on his tag team partner Bryan Tucker last year to join the villianous Sterling Oil, he has started a new chapter in his career and is vying for the Undisputed title. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s held it by the end of 2016.
9. “The Bollocks” Kenny Williams
I’m sure you’ve all heard of this guy. Another extremely talented athlete. Kenny wrestles for quite a few companies, such as Insane Championship Wrestling and Premier British Wrestling, where he is currently one half of the tag team champions alongside Grado. Kenny always gives pulls out his A-game in the squared circle no matter how tough his opponent is.
8. “Tenacious” Johnny Lions
Another mainstay in WrestleZone comes in at number 8 as we have “Tenacious” Johnny Lions. Even if you don’t follow WZ there’s still a chance you’ve heard of Johnny as he also competes for companies such as the World Wide Wrestling League and Discovery Wrestling, where he teams with Andy Wild as the Wild Lions. If you haven’t seen his matches then a good place to start would be his match against Damien from WZ’s 2016 Regal Rumble so give it a watch when it’s out on DVD.
7. Noam Dar
One of the biggest names in recent history is Noam Dar. Always puts on a great performance no matter what. 2016 has been a great year for him so far, having won the PWE Elite Rumble and now being selected for WWE’s Global Cruiserweight Series. Is this the year of Noam Dar?
6. “The Beast of Belfast” Big Damo
Big Damo is certainly a big dude but when he steps inside a wrestling ring he can fly like anyone else. Being the reigning ICW World Heavyweight champion he is quite a big face when it comes to Scottish wrestling. Hopefully he remains champion for the next little while.
5. “The Iron Man” Joe Coffey
Coming in at number 5 is Scotland’s resident Iron Man, Joe Coffey. Joe is one of the best performers right now and has pulled off some astonishing feats of strength. If you want to see a great wrestling contest, just put him against literally anyone but make sure it’s an Iron Man match.
4. Chris Renfrew
Chris Renfrew is esentially the modern day Stone Cold. His matches are always great no matter how hardcore he gets. The more hardcore the better! His Scottish Wrestling Rules match against DCT from last night’s ICW Friday Night Fight Club tapings sounded like a great contest from what I heard so there’s another match to give a watch when it goes on demand.
3. “The Revolutionary” Damien
Another WrestleZone star comes onto the list in the form of Sterling Oil’s Damien. I think it’s his gimmick that gets him this high with the whole revolution thing. That, and his kicks. His catchphrase lately has been “Off With his Head!” and when he says that, he really does mean it.
2. “The Best Young Wrestler in the World” Lewis Girvan
There are not enough good words that can be said about Lewis Girvan. His technical abilities are a beauty to watch. If you ever attend a show and Lewis Girvan is wrestling, he’s worth the money, especially if he’s against my number one.
1. “The King of Catch” Aspen Faith
I don’t imagine many people would have Aspen Faith as number one, especially with the likes of Big Damo and Grado going around but for me, he really sticks out. His submissions, his technical holds and especially his finisher. I’ve never seen a move quite like the Faith Buster.
Join me next week where I take a look at my top 10 tag teams!
