Last weekend saw W3L host a private event for the ‘Make A Wish’ foundation and for a child by the name of Zachary, who had just recovered from heart surgery. It was humbling knowing that I would be lacing up the boots for such a good cause along with other wrestlers from W3L, such as Mike Musso, Kevin Williams and Taylor Bryden, and I was looking forward to being a part of the event.
This particular event would also see me be someone’s first match, a role I last remember playing when Morado (now wrestling without the mask as Craig Stephens) made his debut at a SSW show in May 2014. That someone was Callum Lions, who is apparently the son of my tag team partner Johnny Lions (making him W3L’s first ever second generation wrestler if that is the case!) and a chap that trains at the W3L Action Academy.
Callum did well in his first match, going hold for hold with yours truly and even nailing me with a ‘Lion’ Cutter that his apparent father would be proud of and that the children in attendance recognised as the RKO. This was not enough to put yours truly away though, as I managed to defeat the young ‘lion’ with the Chokeslam From ‘Eck. Callum would get his revenge though in the main event battle royale, where he ended up eliminating me and various others before going on to win the whole thing!
Other highlights of this event saw Mike Musso face Saqib Ali, Kevin Williams going one-on-one with Taylor Bryden and The Very Good Mister Euan G Mackie having his suspension lifted for the day in a match versus Prince Asad. The organisers of the event were complimentary towards the event and Zachary and his pals in attendance enjoyed themselves, so all in all it was a good day. Young Zachary was also presented with a tremendous cake, which is one of, if not the greatest wrestling-themed cakes I have ever seen!
As I said at the start of this blog, it was humbling to be part of such a good cause and to be able to make a young lad’s wish come true. It was most certainly one of the most positive and fulfilling experiences of my six year career and I would enjoy to have another opportunity of the same nature.
W3L’s next show is on 28th December at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park and you can buy your tickets at www.w3lwrestling.com. Matches are likely to be announced in the build-up to the show and on W3L Wrestling Showdown (www.w3lnetwork.com). Next weeks blog will be a preview of the Blackridge Wrestling ‘Jokers are Wild’ tag team tournament taking place next Saturday at The Craig Inn Centre in Bathgate. I have already spoken my mind on the topic and can be viewed via the Lucian Maynard Smith Facebook page. Until then though, that is the life of Smith. Good day.
