Welcome to another interview on Scottish Wrestling Network. We caught up with Ashley Vega who has been making waves across the country. The winner of our SWN Year End Awards One To Watch 2019 award has certainly been on a roll recently. We had the chance to interview her last year as part of our Starter For 10 series and wanted to delve a little deeper into the world of Ashley Vega.
You started training at the PBW Academy at 14, did you find starting at such a young age has had its advantages in your development?
Starting training at such a young age gave me lots of experience as I turned 18 last year and already I have done more than I thought I could ever do in wrestling. Its certainly been a big advantage for me.
What have you found to be the hardest part of training?
For me the hardest part of training has been believing in myself. It’s always been something I’ve struggled with, I’m doing more than ever in my wrestling career right now and I’m finally starting to believe that I’m meant to be here. Sometimes you need to remember why you started.
What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to your first day of training?
Advice to my younger self is to ignore what everyone else thinks and remember why you are here.
You were announced as part of Kings Road Warriors at the tail end of 2018 along with fellow PBW Academy trainees Jesse Santana and Angel Hayze, how did that come about and what’s it like working with Aspen Faith, Lewis Girvan and Sammii Jayne?
Everyone involved get on so well and it was all Aspen’s idea. The idea of the three best wrestlers in Scotland right now making waves about the UK helping out three young rising stars is the concept of it all. Working with them all has been amazing and a lot fun, they really do challenge us and push us to our limits!
Speaking of Sammii Jayne, you made your Pro Wrestling:EVE debut recently facing Sammii, one of your dream opponents you mentioned in our last interview. Coming into a company that is at the forfront of women’s wrestling in Europe can be a daunting thing adding that to facing someone on your “wish list” so to speak, did you have any nerves coming to it and how did you feel about the match?
Getting the chance to debut for Pro-Wresting:EVE especially against Sammii was overall one of my favourite wrestling experiences. I had a lot nerves going into it but as soon as I got into that ring I had so much fun wrestling both Jetta and Sammii Jayne. I’m really looking forward to sharing the ring with Jetta again at the next Fierce Females show.
Still on debuts, you also popped up at Discovery Wrestling in January facing familiar foe Angel Hayze to rave reviews. Was there a bit more comfort coming into this one as you have faced Hayze numerous times in the past?
My Discovery debut meant so much to me, and I couldn’t of asked for a better women to do it with other than Angel Hayze. I have nerves pretty much before every match but yes sharing the ring with Angel made the experience a lot less nerve wracking as we have faced off together numerous times.
Do you have any short/long term goals in your wrestling career, be it wrestling for a certain company or at a certain venue?
I just want to have as much fun as I can and do as much as I possibly can in wrestling.
Are there any countries that you’d want to wrestle in or tour?
I would love to have the chance to wrestle in America.
Where can we see you next?
I will be wrestling at Source this Saturday and Sunday!
And finally, the women’s revolution has been on an upward trajectory over the last 5 years or so, what are your thoughts on the current state of women’s wrestling in the UK and worldwide?
Women are proving time and time again that we can do what the guys can, and better.
Our thank you goes to Ashley for the opportunity to send her some questions. You can see her this weekend at Source Wrestling ‘Apex’ and ‘Origins’.
