I have delved into the Community Pro Wrestling Patreon archives to check out one of there more recent events. CPW made their debut in Whitburn, which hasn’t seen wrestling since (according to my research) 2018, a night that saw Community Pro Wrestling owner Ravie Davie in the main event and here he is returning with his own promotion. A loud crowd was on hand at Whitburn Education Community Centre for a night of wrestling.

Chip Watson defeated Robb Stow by pinfall.

Robb Stow muscled around The Tribal Chef in the opening lock ups with the crowd in Whitburn on board for Chip Watson’s brand of silliness, and they let Stow know all about it. A wrist lock counter from Watson had him on the up for a moment but once Robb got his hands on him it was heavy strikes and keeping his opponent grounded.

A splash in the corner being dodged gave Chip a reprieve, landing a second rope clothesline, but his lariat was countered into a couple hard backbreakers from Stow. Watson managed to fire back with a slingshot spear for a near fall.

Watson managed to get the better of a forearm exchange and git an eye rake as his prize, as these two went at it back and forth. Stow tried to finish the match with a Blue Thunder Bomb but Chip got a shoulder up. Watson hit a cutter, and full nelson spin out flatliner to score the win.

On the surface Chip Watson is a comedy act, but once the bell rang there was a lot more on the plate. From seeing him in action there is a heavy influence of Gene Munny with his over the top characteristics but with the in-ring ability to not be pigeon holed into a two dimensional parody. Robb had some nice backbreaking offense and I’m glad to see him striking outside of Edinburgh.

The Big Strong Kings (Nick Justice & The Big Strong Man) defeated Danny Mullet & Kayden Cross by pinfall.

The Big Strong Man got stuck in a big strong wrist lock by Mullet and Cross to start off with and a blind tag in from Nick Justice didn’t help The Big Strong Kings with the charismatic pair quickly knocking him to the mat with a double team clothesline.

After some intervention from The Big Strong Man, Justice was finally able to wrangle Mullet and isolate him from Kayden Cross, making the tag to The Big Strong Man to continue the big strong beat down. The Big Strong Kings continued to stay on top, sweeping Kayden off the apron to stop a tag, before landing a backsuplex-neckbreaker combo that could only garner a two count.

Mullet finally dip, dived, and dodged his way to get Kayden Cross into the contest as he ran through The Big Strong Man and Nick Justice. Just as it looked to be all things Kayden Cross, he lifted The Big Strong Man up for a big strong slam but turned around to find Danny Mullet delivering a kick between the legs to fell Cross and allow The Big Strong Man to get the big strong win for his big strong team.

A solid tag team match, Danny Mullet showed a lot of smoothess in his movement and some great positioning. He’s a little rough around the edges but for his age and what he put forward I am very interested to see how he develops in the coming years. This match felt less about The Big Strong Kings, they got a bit of time before the bell to rile the crowd up but they needed little invitation, and more about showcasing Danny for his eventual betrayal of Kayden Cross.

In that case it was very effective.

The Wanderer defeated Thorin by pinfall.

The Wanderer jumped Thorin during his wee pre-match pose to start the match with a bang. Thorin weathered the early attack, throwing himself into The Wanderer with a back elbow and a crisp hip toss but his top turnbuckle endeavour was cut short by Wanderer throwing himself to rattle the top rope to cause an imbalance.

As the “specky hotdog” chants continued, The Wanderer kept on top of Thorin with corner clotheslines, basking in the hatred from the crowd. That basking left him prone for overconfidence with one clothesline too many gave Thorin the chance to leapfrog Wanderer and get some momentum built, crashing to the outside with a dive through the ropes and colliding with his opponent as well as his face colliding off the floor.

That just seemed to power up Thorin, brushing off a spring up crossbody from Wanderer and slamming him to the canvas, but a missed Swanton and enziguri had him wander into a cutter to cut The Vi-King of the Ring’s night short.

There were some little missteps in the back portion but seeing an adrenaline fueled Thorin all fired up after face planting the outside from his dive really made his charisma shoot up tenfold. A good match.

Planet A arrived, Kev.i.n bigged up their “international talent” Ellie Armstrong that lead Cousin Zander and Steg to arrive and quickly put out the challenge to make it a six person tag match instead with their own international talent as Ravie Davie made his way out to join the family.

The Govan Team (Ravie Davie, Steg & Cousin Zander) defeated Planet A (Ellie Armstrong, Kev.i.n, & James Diaz) w/Abbie by pinfall.

The Whitburn audience were rabid to some Govan Team, Davie promised to not put his hands on the old lady in the match as Ellie Armstrong screamed that she was 29 which was hilarious. Davie and Kev kicked things off with some Ravie Davie patter and shenanigans, test of strength dancing, wet willies etc.

Kev had enough of getting made a fool of and tagged in big James Diaz, who got overran by The Govan Team, Diaz tagged in Ellie Armstrong who showed no effects to a couple Cousin Zander Atomic Drops, inverted and all, so Zander just open palmed her on the forehead for the laughs. The Atomic Drops worked on Kev and James as The Govan Team brought the party to Whitburn.

Davie hit a four step up splash to Ellie in the corner which, even after a slight mistiming on the run and needed a second go, was still a fun moment. Ellie almost suffered an Itchy Bum Diver from Zander but a Planet A distraction gave her a chance to land a Bayleaf To Belly, and a cartwheel splash for a near fall.

With Cousin Zander on the backfoot, Planet A took control by isolating The People’s Cousin but Ellie’s overconfidence during her ten punches in the corner saw her crash down with a sit out powerbomb to get The Govan Team back on track.

Some Planet A miscommunication saw Kev and Diaz donk Armstrong with a double elbow to the head which saw Ellie suffer a cut over her eye. It didn’t stop her coming back to escape a fireman’s carry and push Zander into Davie perched on the top turnbuckle for a nasty landing on the apron. Ellie hoisted Zander up for a pumphandle drop but the pin was broken up by Steg.

After some chaos it was a Zander suplex into a Steg powerbomb, finished off by a Ravie Davie springboard moonsault that saw Kev.i.n, Kev.i.out for the count.

The match fell apart a bit towards the end but the crowd were hot for The Govan Team and the mayhem that comes with the trio to supersede any mishaps in the ring. I appreciate that Ellie Armstrong has rips in her mesh tights, saving the environment by reusing slightly worn gear is a great little added detail. A big entertaining first half main event.

CPW Jay Bee Dub Hardcore Championship – Jay Bee Dub defeated The Renegade Wrex by pinfall to win the CPW Jay Bee Dub Hardcore Championship.

Back from the interval and it was hardcore title action, Jay Bee Dub came in with a flurry of offense before almost splatting himself on a short dive to the outside. Wrex took over, raking the eyes of JBD and putting the boots to him, swatting away the attempts to fight back.

After avoiding a corner splash, JBD got some momentum going, landing an axe handle from the top but a missed moonsault saw him stumble into a flatliner for a two count. Wrex brought in the belt and was admonished by the referee… this was when I found out that despite it being a hardcore championship match it wasn’t hardcore rules.

A superkick by JBD and a Coast To Coast set up Wrex for handstand elbow drop got the pin and saw the CPW Jay Bee Dub Hardcore Championship coming home with Jay Bee Dub.

It was fine with nothing too egregious in the action. There is a flow missing from JBD matches that has you clearly see the cogs turning in his brain, it does makes things look unnatural and stilted. Wrex looked solid on the offense and maybe some tweaks to his presentation could see him flourish more. Once again the fans in the audience were invested in the action.

CPW Cruiserweight Championship – Martin MacAlistair w/Ellie Armstrong by pinfall to win the CPW Cruiserweight Championship.

Martin MacAlistair and E-Town started off quick, MacAlistair being able use his own plant based power but E-Town brought the agility to send Martin flailing about with arm drags before he had to seek refuge with a bandaged up Ellie Armstrong at ringside.

An aggressive MacAlistair struck with a forearm to knock E-Town back, then went to work taking shots at the torso of the champion with a hard Irish Whip into the corner and putting the boots to his chest. Once the torso had went to yellow on the meter, it was the turn of the limbs with a Garvin Stomp journey around the joints.

E-Town managed to get a pin attempt in but MacAlistair kicked out but in doing so held onto the wrist of E-Town to smash him with a short arm clothesline to regain the upper hand. E-Town wasn’t to be deterred, using a monkey flip counter to dive from the second rope with a dropkick to put him in the driver’s seat. A 619 and Boom Drop could only get a near fall with The Vicious Lad continuing the run with a Fisherman’s Buster and a Codebreaker but Ellie Armstrong’s intervention to put Martin’s foot on the bottom rope broke the fall and was the difference maker.

Ellie jumped onto the apron to check on MacAlistair while E-Town protested the count, E-Town charged towards Martin but a sidestep saw him knock Ellie to the floor. He walked into a small package for the three count that saw Planet A steal a win to make up for their earlier embarrassment to the shock of the crowd.

Another decent match. It was odd to see Martin MacAlistair be so ruthless with my experience being ‘The Positive Charge’, nice guy, pure soul, etc. and here he scowled his way through picking apart his opponent. It was steady with little down time for an enjoyable contest.

CPW Heavyweight Championship – Big Ross Hauser defeated Monstrum w/James Erdos by pinfall to retain the CPW Heavyweight Championship.

Hauser and Monstrum traded shoulder blocks but neither could be knocked off their feet for a stalemate. The shoulder barges continued as Monstrum hit a headbutt to sent Ross stumbling. A missed charge into the corner got Hauser back into it as they fought onto the apron with Big Ross diving off the apron to the floor to finally take Monstrum off his feet.

The battle went into the crowd, James Erdos stepped in to turn the champions attention away to allow a sneak attack by the monster. The assault to Hauser continued with Monstrum swiping away comebacks, standing his ground against Big Ross.

Monstrum continued to batter away at Ross but Hauser managed to bounce off the ropes to strike with a lariat to end the match and retain the CPW Heavyweight Championship.

There looked to be a situation in the crowd that may have seen the match being cut short, it diverted the crowd attention away from the match which saw it lose momentum. It wasn’t pretty as two big guys throwing hands at each other rarely is but with the audience being more concerned with something else happening (from what I understand someone collapsed and was receiving some medical attention) it lost that heat and fan support required to make a match like this a spectacle.

A flat end but it was out of their hands, the crowd interaction throughout the night should have had this be a big ooh-aah Godzilla versus King Kong battle and the comeback lariat would have got a wild reaction on any other show but due to that distraction and drop in atmosphere it made the match dull which is a damn shame for both involved.

However, despite that, no match outstayed their welcome. Danny Mullet stood out as a promising talent, The Govan Team got the big reaction you would expect in Community Pro Wrestling, and each match (bar the main event due to outside forces) delivered a well paced and easy watch.
