It’s creeping ever closer to Aberdeen Anarchy and we have our countdown of the top 10 moments from The Beach Ballroom ongoing, how about the top 10 matches? Every year I list my top 10 matches from the shows from the venue and this year is no different. After having a chance to re-watch a couple matches, I’ve added some from last year and re-jigged a couple from previous years to make up my top 10 for this year. Matches are ranked with several factors in mind and is all down to personal opinion.
10. Mr P, Kaden Garrick & Johnny Lions vs Sterling Oil (William Sterling, Alan Sterling & Damien) (2016)
Kicking off the top 10 is a wild ladder match between Sterling Oil and the team of Mr P, Kaden Garrick and Johnny Lions. The stipulation coming into the bout was if Sterling Oil won then they would get title matches at that years Battle of the Nations but if they lost Richard R. Russell would have to face Lions, Garrick and Mr P in a three on one handicap match at the event. The match itself had plenty of spills and thrills with William Sterling taking the brunt of the punishment from the ladders.
9. Aspen Faith vs Bryan Tucker vs Zach Dyamite vs Bingo Ballance (2017)
Another ladder match to make the list is the four way match to determine the first ever WrestleZone Tri-Counties Champion, it might not have been the most brutal of ladder matches but it was edge of your seat viewing, maybe because I was crossing every finger and toe to see Aspen Faith be crowned the champion. All four men had a viable chance to win and was so close and many moments, thankfully Faith grabbed the title and I could breathe a sign of relief.
8. Aspen Faith vs Len Ironside (2014)
Something a bit different at number 8. World of Sport matches can be tricky in this day and age but Len Ironside and Aspen Faith crafted a story into Aberdeen Anarchy that made this all the more interesting. The little things were the difference makers in this, referee Denzil Law in his blue shirt and bow-tie, Aspen drinking red bull at the breaks while Len, ever the professional, drank water. Even seeing Marty Jones accompany Len while Aspen was flanked by James Midas and KT Kane. The match was so smooth, which really came as a surprise but that was judging a book by the cover in the case of Len. A gripping match that saw Aspen cheat to gain the second fall and strut away victorious.
7. Kenny Williams vs Bingo Ballance vs Shawn Johnson (2016)
Seven is a triple threat match against three highly talented wrestlers. It was interesting to see Shawn Johnson on his own, as his tag team partner at the time Bryan Tucker was off facing Jack Jester, but it was a taste of what was to come with Johnson clotheslining Tucker later in the year to join Sterling Oil. The match was full of awesome moves and counters all over the place that were just stunning.
6. Aspen Faith & Sammii Jayne vs Lewis Girvan & Viper (2016)
The conclusion of the Aspen Faith-Lewis Girvan series came about at Aberdeen Anarchy for an incredible inter-gender tag team bout with all four wrestlers putting everything into it. The ending of Viper powerbombing Sammii off the second rope was felt all the way up in the balcony and was picture perfect. A fantastic match.
5. Sammii Jayne vs Viper (2017)
Marking the half way point is the first every tables match at The Beach Ballroom and was between two of the best wrestlers in the world. Viper was flanked by Sammii’s original opponent Melina, who suffered a knee injury weeks before, which added more interest to an already great looking match. Sammii would gain the victory, further cementing her status as Queen of WrestleZone and the post-match confrontation with Melina made for something special.
4. Jack Jester vs Crusher Craib (2014)
When it comes to story, I don’t think there has been a better story driven feud in WrestleZone history than this match right here. I’ve talked about the match a million times so I will just go through the basics, Crusher Craib is an unstoppable monster, Jack Jester wins the Regal Rumble and rattles the cage of Craib, Craib starts to lash out, Jester threatened one of the staff at ringside, Craib begged Jester to stop, Craib became human, Jester tombstoned Craib and won the title. Captivating.
3. Scotty 2 Hotty vs Grado (2014)
Hey now, hey now, this is what dreams are made of. One of the most entertaining matches to ever take place at Aberdeen Anarchy, sure it wasn’t technically sound, there were little in the way of “wrestling holds” but Grado and Scotty created something truly special, the crowd were unglued for every shenanigan to take place.
2. Thunder Buddies (William Sterling & Blue Thunder) vs The Granite City Hotshots (Shawn Johnson & Bryan Tucker) (2014)
The first ladder match in WrestleZone and it was simply sublime. All four men took huge risks in order to win the WrestleZone Tag Team Championships. There’s always a limit to how far that wrestlers can go when it comes to ‘family friendly’ wrestling but these guys pushed that limit. It was brutal, painful to watch, but yet it was brilliant. As The Granite City Hotshots raised the titles, the bar had certainly been set for future ladder matches in WrestleZone with many coming close but not quite beating the original.
1. Bingo Ballance vs Stevie Xavier (2013)
After five years, the first official match for WrestleZone at The Beach Ballroom is still the best match in WrestleZone history in my humble opinion. The twists, turns and impressive display of talent to kick off the show was wonderful. I re-watched it recently and it’s still as good as it was five years ago.
