Hola. It’ll be a few weeks before our road trip podcast goes out into the world (but it is on Patreon at www.patreon.com/scotwresnet). So in lieu of that, time to do some writing and that to talk about the wrestling in Peterhead this past weekend.
Usual preamble. Arrived in Peterhead in good time, visited the Brewtoon Tasting Room and Bon Bon, true staples of the town. The venue was easy to find, a NCP across the road to stick the car in, a good time on the horizon.
I realised my age when I was impressed that the door to Ballroom, where the show was being held, was at the end of a wide hall and a straight line. Walking stick at the door in the future please and thanks. One minor complaint is that the queue fell apart, it started well then just became a bunch of folk roaming the hotel lobby waiting for the big door to open. We’re experts at shuffling into a hall though, no rammies involved.
It was the low setting ring, I know it’s functional for the space, but I still don’t like it. It’s up there with inflatable hammers in my tier list of things that I don’t like at wrestling shows but won’t actually spoil my enjoyment of a show.
VIP Ticket Holder Match – Triple Threat – Chris Archer defeated Oliver Green, and Evan Young by pinfall.
The very important portion of the event kicked off with Chris Archer against Evan Young and Oliver Green in a good ol’ triple threat. Despite Archer offering the challenge he decided that he wasn’t fussed with being involved in the opening exchanges to leave Green and Young do a bit of tussling.
Archer tried to interject a couple times to just find himself being backdropped out of the way. The second with Green holding Young in a headlock and backdropping Archer was a nice little highlight.
All three got involved but it was Archer grabbing his chain, initially I thought it was in his boot but I would have to review the footage, and clocked Oliver Green in the face to pick up his first win in 10 months.
A very brisk triple threat with Archer being the veteran using the no disqualification rule of a triple threat to get the victory. It continues the veteran versus the young kids narrative. It’s interesting that we have this going on along with The Foundation against the old guard of WrestleZone. It’s like the two sides of the same coin we’re seeing in motion.
This was a good match, as expected, we got a bit more Evan Young who is looking more comfortable in the ring. Green showed plenty of confidence after his little winning streak with his only downfall was Archer using a loophole to bring a chain into the bout.
The Outfit (Ted O’Keefe & Murphy) defeated Warriors Against Low Life Entities (Bryan Tucker & Rhys Dawkins) by pinfall.
The main show kicked off with a non-title match with Tucker and Dawkins taking on The Outfit. The WALLY chants were loud, very loud. The Warriors Against Low Life Entities come out to the theme from The Bill but I miss the Bye Bye Scotty theme, they need to bring it back.
The Outfit were pretty dominant in this one, Tucker and Dawkins bumbled about running into each other. There was a moment where Tucker grabbed Dawkins to use him as a battering ram into Murphy, but when Dawkins returned the favour Tucker found his head being ran head first into the top turnbuckle when Murphy evaded the attack.
Dawkins, when he was able to, hit a nice standing elbow drop. He ran into Murphy, then Murphy ran into Dawkins, and Tucker, several times. He threw in some Samoan Drops for the lolz.
O’Keefe paid tribute to the injured Dino with a little strutting and a big standing elbow drop.
To the surprise of no one The Outfit picked up the win. A straightforward crowd pleaser of a match. Who would’ve thought Ted O’Keefe was so charismatic in getting fans to cheer him?
Even though the wally chants are still deafening, I think time is coming up on the Warriors Against Low Life Entities as a unit. They united to take out Scotty Swift, done, they continued to investigate the identity of Mr WrestleZone with mixed results. What now? Unless a miracle happens they aren’t going anywhere near the tag team titles.
Give me Dawkins in singles, he’s been under the Bryan Tucker learning tree for a while now, maybe after Aberdeen Anarchy he can find his feet in the Tri-Counties division. It doesn’t mean that we need to have a clear cut break up of Warriors Against Low Life Entities, they can do the RybAxel farewell parting.
Zach Dynamite defeated TV’s Umar Mohammed by pinfall.
The absolute gall of Zach Dynamite entering with a Mr WrestleZone mask in hand, what a bastard.
Umar did a leap in the corner to avoid a Dynamite rush and countered smoothly into a reverse DDT. It was lovely. Zach tied Umar into the ropes for a blistering chop but took his eye off the ball running to the ropes which saw Umar escape and land a high knee to the face.
Dynamite put the Mr WrestleZone mask onto Umar to antagonise him further. Mohammed escaped a powerbomb attempt and managed to lock in The Big Kachowski but it looked like Dynamite raked the eyes to get out of it.
Captain Alan wandered out to attempt to steal Umar’s “showaddywaddy”, a claim that was confirmed when he asked, loudly, why they wouldn’t let him steal the showaddywaddy, and follow up “excuse me but I’m trying to steal this showaddywaddy”. It was enough to distract Mohammed, who had a Thundergun Express ready to leave the station, only to walk into a superkick and planted with a Killshot from Zach Dynamite for the pin.
A brilliant match, these two worked so fluidly with each other. The conclusion left it open for a further rematch down the line. It’s 2-0 in Dynamite’s favour now I think, so best of five? Two wrestlers that I enjoy watching, having a match that I enjoyed, big shock.
WrestleZone Tri-Counties Championship – Caleb Valhalla defeated Connor Molloy by pinfall to retain the WrestleZone Tri-Counties Championship.
Molloy continues to settle into his mean mugging transformation but it wasn’t long after the opening bell he found himself getting his chest caved in on the apron by a hammer-arm wielding Valhalla.
The chemistry that we got at Station Hotel Showdown and Granite City Showdown remained slick with plenty of counters. In a call back to Station Hotel, Connor tried to do a Sliced Bread #2 on the the outside but Caleb rotated him onto his shoulders into a fireman’s carry. Connor managed to wriggle out to avoid a crash landing onto the floor below.
They traded big German Suplexes, Molloy targeted the knee of Valhalla to try and take out the spear and Helride from his arsenal of moves but it was a big spear and Helride that finished the job for Caleb Valhalla who held his weakened knee during the pin.
The crowd dipped in noise at times but they certainly picked up during the hard hits. I had expected some interference but it was just a straight up one on one match. It didn’t quite hit the heights of Station Hotel Showdown but that’s because there was a change in dynamic, Molloy was more desperate to win, lots of sneering from Connor, no more shoulder shimmies, plus there was a title on the line, all that kind of stuff played a factor but this was still a good back and forth match.
Mikkey Vago w/Tommy Raiden defeated Captain Alan Sterling by pinfall.
Sterling parted the crowd to point out one specific child to call them ugly, I adore Captain Alan. Vago and Raiden arrived with a Singapore Cane and drumsticks in tow. Sterling noted that there was too much wood in the ring and the referee needed to check Vago for any wood… lice.
He asked if Vago’s denim cut off jacket was a showaddywaddy, which Vago confirmed, but upon getting a hold of it he saw through Mikkey lies.
Captain Alan shenanigans ensued with him riding a flailing Tommy Raiden around the ring. He tried a death defying dive off the apron… but landed on his feet and turned around into the right hand of The Heavy Metal Hooligan.
We got the patented cartwheel elbow, the Heavy Axe Handle from the second rope. Sterling hit a Stunner of his own which he congratulated himself for doing so. However, TV’s Umar Mohammed returned the favour and distracted Captain Alan which lead him into walking towards a Heavy Metal Stunner for the three count.
Vago passed his jacket to Raiden after a job well done. Raiden put it on and looked proud of himself as the duo exited.
The Mikkey Vago/Tommy Raiden tandem is starting to pay off with Raiden really expressing himself more, it was the most comfortable I’ve seen him in front of a crowd. I’m interested to see if this leads to a tag team run in the future.
The match itself was filled with plenty laughs, the rodeo around ringside was hilarious, we got a conclusion to the earlier interference with Umar returning. It just means it has to be a sherwani on a pole match at Regal Rumble to settle this right?
William Sterling & Damien defeated The Foundation of the Future (Ryan Riley & Bruiser Brad Evans) by disqualification.
William Sterling opened his bag of jokes by referring to Bruiser Brad as Shrek, now, there’s a lot of things you can call Brad but he’s a handsome boy, I can only assume that Sterling meant human Shrek from the second film. Brad retorted by pushing over Sterling and overpowering the former WrestleZone Tag Team Champion several times in the opening exchange.
Riley and Evans used their cunning to keep Damien in their corner with quick tags, dropping William off the apron when the opportunity arose. Sterling got the hot tag with a couple big splashes in the corner.
Just as it looked like Sterling Oil were about to cash out, Dynamite snuck out to jump Damien to cause the disqualification. The Foundation beat down Damien until Sterling staggered forward with Bruiser Brad’s big chunky chain to send the trio out of the ring in retreat.
During the Foundation beat down to Damien, Blue Thunder stood up on the soundstage and looked to be on a sticky wicket deciding whether to get involved but William Sterling started swinging to break up the momentary thought of a Thunder Buddies reunion. Maybe I was a bit left field with Bryan Tucker getting jumped by The Foundation next. It might be a good idea for Blue Thunder to watch his back going forward.
A solid match, The Foundation of the Future are a great tag team eh, I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned that. The heavyweight showdown between Brad and William was good. Damien and Ryan Riley had a great encounter, and Zach Dynamite continues to be the absolute worst human.
Undisputed WrestleZone Championship – Lost Boy Aspen defeated Ronan King by pinfall to retain the Undisputed WrestleZone Championship.
Ronan King swaggered out for his second WrestleZone main event on the bounce with all the momentum of a runaway freight train. Aspen entering looking like he had just hit the jackpot, plenty of high fives, stealing King’s hat and throwing it into the crowd, carrying Bumbag Thunder, there was a skip in his step, it was almost like he dreamt of chopping the chest of Ronan the night before and realised that all his dreams were coming true that evening.
There were more chops that a butchers shop as the sound reverberated every time Aspen’s hand connected with the chest of Ronan King. King tried to return the chops but was met with a sick clothesline. Aspen hit a dropkick through the bottom and middle rope to send King flying back. Ronan sailed over the top rope onto Aspen in return.
King hung on, trying shortcuts, getting near falls, but after numerous counters to his attempts, Aspen caught Ronan and trapped him into the package tombstone to retain the title after an absolute war.
A hard-hitting main event. Ronan didn’t look out of place in the main event title setting, and in my opinion this was one of the best matches in Lost Boy Aspen’s Undisputed WrestleZone Championship reign, certainly that I have seen. Since the formation of SKOL BROL up in the North East, Aspen looks to have finally relaxed into being a fan favourite, maybe with all the lessons Aspen is giving Caleb in Midgard ways, Caleb is giving Aspen the ultimate reward, friendship.
A highly enjoyable show. SKOL BROL got their revenge in singles action against Flippy N Drippy, Umar tied up the Captain Alan obsession over his sherwani for the time being, The Foundation of the Future continue to be causing chaos, there was advancement in the Raiden/Vago tandem, Archer outsmarting the kids, and The Outfit get a dominating performance in action. A nice bonus chapter on the road to Aberdeen Anarchy.
Special mention to Blue Thunder. He was on crew duties on the little soundstage, no commentary corner on this show, so in the corner of your eye you could spot Thunder’s reactions throughout the show. During the pre-show he was supporting Green and Young, barking encouragement. As mentioned during the Foundation versus Sterling and Damien, you felt that little step forward whether it was conscious or not. His expressive reactions to the big moments during the matches were great.
Next up, Regal Rumble on March 30th!
