12 Reviews of Christmas: WrestleZone Battle of the Nations 2015

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, WrestleZone Battle of the Nations 2015.

With Chris McDonald and Brian Stephenson handling commentary duties, Martyn Clunes hyped up the card before we kicked things off with the first match of the evening.

Triple Threat Elimination Match for the WrestleZone Tag Team Championships
Kaden Garrick & Mr P def. The Granite City Hotshots (Shawn Johnson & Bryan Tucker) (c) and Chris Archer & Lord Mr Malice w/Jeeves Winchester by Pinfall

Kicking things off was a Triple Threat Elimination Match as The Granite City Hotshots put their Tag Team Championships on the line against two random teams of Kaden Garrick & Mr P and Chris Archer and the newly rechristened Lord Mr Malice, who were accompanied by “The Vice Executive of Butler Relations” Jeeves Winchester. With Archer’s usual tag team partner Mikkey Vago out injured, Lord Mr Malice saved the day for The Outcast. Archer kicked things off on his own, taking on anyone else that entered the ring. Mr P kept him grounded with some quick arm drags before forcing Archer to tag in Malice. With Malice distracted, Kaden Garrick was tagged in as he speared him out of his boots for the first elimination. With the match now as a standard two on two tag match, the two teams went back and forth with The Hotshots using their quick high flying moves while Garrick and P stuck to a more power-based attack. With both Hotshots teaming up on P up top, the former management representative was able to knock them off and take them both down with a flying crossbody. Kaden Garrick was finally tagged back in, taking out both Hotshots with his hard-hitting offence. As The Hotshots regained the momentum for a brief period of time, Mr P avoided Johnson’s attack and shoved him into a Garrick spear for the second elimination to crown new Tag Team Champions. The two pairs embraced after the match before Garrick and P celebrated with their newly won gold.

Order of Elimination;
Kaden Garrick pinned Lord Mr Malice (Chris Archer & Lord Mr Malice eliminated)
Kaden Garrick pinned Shawn Johnson (The Granite City Hotshots eliminated)

Blue Thunder def. William Sterling by DQ

The second match saw a fierce rivalry between former tag partners as Blue Thunder took on Sterling Oil member William Sterling. Thunder attacked Sterling as the latter was making his way to the ring, with the two brawling up to the bar at the back of the venue. As they came back down to ringside, Thunder got in some of his signature moves before Sterling dropped him with a chokeslam backbreaker. Thunder managed to battle back but before he could do any more damage to his former partner, Sterling delivered a low blow to hand Thunder a win via disqualification. This wouldn’t be the last time these two clashed. Stay tuned to further reviews…

Alan Sterling def. Crusher Craib by Pinfall

Rounding off the first half was a singles match between Crusher Craib and Alan Sterling. The Creator of Carnage used his brute force to tear through Alan throughout the contest, but Sterling battled back with his smart ring awareness. After a short brawl at ringside, the action returned to the ring where Alan exposed a turnbuckle. Without the referee noticing it, Alan tripped Crusher face first into the steel before delivering a facewash kick in the corner and a lariat but it wasn’t enough to keep Craib down for the three count. As Craib struggled to get back to his feet, possibly showing signs of suffering another concussion, Alan dropped him with a DDT for the victory. Wobbly on his feet, Crusher stumbled back through the curtain.

Battle of the Nations Match
Doug Williams (England) def. Johnny Lions (Scotland) by Pinfall

As we went into the second half of the show, it was time for the annual Battle of the Nations Match. Representing Scotland was “Tenacious” Johnny Lions while England was represented by former TNA star Doug Williams. A very technical match ensued as expected between these two, with the more experienced Williams using some unique holds to tire out The Tenacious One. But Lions battled back with a beautiful bridging northern lights suplex and some of his more common moves, including The Lion Bite. But after missing a BLE off the top, Williams was back in control. Both men went up top, but Williams knocked Lions and followed with a Bomb Scare diving knee drop for the win. Williams thanked both Lions and the fans in attendance for the reception and the fantastic match he was able to put on.

Intergender Match
Aspen Faith & Sammii Jayne def. Grado & Nikki Storm by Pinfall

The penultimate match of the night saw Aspen Faith teaming with Sammii Jayne to face Grado and the debuting Nikki Storm in an Intergender Match. Grado and Storm proved to be an enjoyable duo, but they failed to amuse The King and Queen of Catch. After playing out as a pretty even match, things went awry for Grado after Nikki Storm accidentally shoved Sammii Jayne’s head into his groin but he managed to bounce back after nailing Aspen with a Roll N Slice. After Grado and Storm became distracted, it allowed Sammii to roll up Nikki with a handful of tights to pick up the win for her team. Aspen and Sammii looked to continue their attack after the match but were quickly disposed of. Grado and Nikki proceeded to dance the night away before heading backstage in what would turn out to be Storm’s first and only WrestleZone appearance, with her now competing in NXT as Nikki Cross.

Undisputed WrestleZone Championship
Damien def. Scotty Swift (c) by DQ

Main event time as Scotty Swift put his Undisputed Championship on the line against the first ever champion Damien. The challenger attacked the champion during his entrance, with a brawl taking place all over The Northern Hotel, involving Swift being backdropped on the wooden floor. A second referee emerged to separate the two, before the bell rang to officially start the match. As the match began, Swift immediately dropped The Revolutionary with a Granite City Driver. As the match progressed, Damien connected with a Superkick and a Codebreaker but The Red Haired Warrior dropped Damien with a suplex off the top. Damien grabbed a steel chair but before he could use it, Swift took it for himself. After having Damien spit in his face, Swift used the chair to inflict pain on Damien giving him a disqualification win but Swift retains the title. As The Sterling Brothers came from backstage to save Damien, a masked man emerged from the crowd and attacked Scotty from behind. The rest of Sterling Oil attacked Swift from behind before the man unmasked himself to reveal the returning Sterling Oil strategist Richard R. Russell. The Granite City Hotshots returned to ringside to chase off Sterling Oil as the show came to a close.

The DVD can bought either at any WrestleZone show or from their online shop for just Β£8.
