Welcome to Starter For 10. We ask professional wrestlers 10 questions so that you can find out a bit more about your favourite real life superheroes.
On this edition, we pose our 10 questions to the Spanish Luchador from the Glasgow Pro Wrestling Asylum, Soldato.
What drew you into professional wrestling?
I have always been a big fan, I loved watching the real-life superheroes on the screen.
Who were your favourite wrestlers growing up and who are your favourites now?
Growing up I was a HUGE Hulk Hogan, Warrior and Macho Man fan. I also loved the Rockers and the LOD. As I got older my favourites changed towards the Rey Mysterios and Eddie Guererros, the guys who I could relate to more as not being 6’7”! Now I love to watch Super Junior matches. I am a huge Ricochet fan right now but this changes frequently.
What made you decide to start training to be a wrestler and where did you start?
I started training at the age of 29, which is a late age to start. As soon as I heard GPWA were opening up the Asylum, I thought I’d give it a go. Being older than most of the coaches wasn’t a barrier though, it’s all about listening and taking on feedback, and finding your own style.
Who are your biggest influences in professional wrestling, as a fan and as a wrestler?
My biggest influences are guys like Rey Mysterio, Penta 0M and Rey Fenix. I love to mash the high flying Lucha style with solid kicks, so striking I take a lot of influence from guys like BT Gunn and Aleister Black.
Who has been your favourite opponent(s) and do you have a favourite match?
I really enjoyed working with Joe Coffey at a GPWA Night at the Asylum show on the tail end of 2017, so that has been my favourite match to date. My most recent match against Jack Dillon was a lot of fun, as we are friends and we worked really well together so that has to be up there too.
What has been your career highlight(s) so far?
My career highlight so far was, again, facing Joe Coffey and it being a competitive match in which I had a lot of offence during his ICW Heavyweight Championship reign.
Who would be your dream opponent, past or present?
Dream opponent would probably be Eddie Guerrero. The matches he put on with Rey Mysterio in WCW were ground-breaking.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
In 5 years time, I hope to be flying around rings all over the country alongside other the other Asylum Originals.
Where can we find you on social media?
And finally, why do you do what you do?
I sometimes ask myself this! Seeing the fan’s reactions make it all worthwhile. Having my son watch my matches in amazement whilst shouting at the bad guy!
