Preview: Respect Pro Wrestling ‘Live in Kilwinning’ April 2019

Following the incredible night that was their March event in Lochwinnoch, Respect Pro Wrestling are coming to Kilwinning on Saturday evening for what looks set to be quite a night of action-packed entertainment. With new Heavyweight and Tag Team Champions crowned last month, it’s time to usher in a new era for RPW.

RPW Heavyweight Championship
Theo Doros vs Lewis Girvan (c)

After he defeated Kings of Catch partner Aspen Faith in a Submissions Match to regain the Heavyweight Championship, Lewis Girvan faces his first challenger to his second reign with the gold in the form of a returning Theo Doros. Since last August, Lewis and Aspen have waged war over the main prize on offer to all on the Respect Pro roster. Although it originally began as a bit of a comedy skit (helped by KINGS ROAD), the reigning ICW Tag Team Champions developed a full-blown rivalry over the gold, which got the better of Girvan as he continued attacking Faith after his win. While the contender to the title has been confirmed for the big three year anniversary show later this year, The Renegade will still have to defend the gold in the months between, starting with The Superior Cypriot. Theo Doros hasn’t been seen in a Respect Pro Wrestling since February 2018, when he and former House of Saynt partner Christopher Saynt were victorious over Divinity’s Brandon Adams and Delsin Dayre. In his time away, he reigned supreme as United Pro Wrestling’s Heavyweight Champion, losing the title in March to Chris Lamb shortly before the company’s closure. When one door closes though, another one happens. A tough challenge for one Lewis Girvan.

RPW Tag Team Championships
BMD (Bobby Roberts & JD Bravo) (c) vs The Violence Institute (MATT DALY & Luke Matthews)

Heading into the March event, a four team Elimination Match was announced, with the winners becoming the inaugural RPW Tag Team Champions. After Team AbFab and The Sensational Scenebirds were ousted from the match, it would be Bobby Roberts and JD Bravo, collectively known as BMD, who walked out of the Lochwinnoch Community Annexe as the first ever Tag Team Champions as they defeated Violence Institute members MATT DALY and Luke Matthews. That loss hasn’t sat well with DALY and Matthews though, and so a match between those two teams will see the first championship defence for Roberts and Bravo. Feeling sick and tired of their tenure in RPW, The Violence Institute demanded one last opportunity to prove themselves in Kilwinning. A win here would perhaps change everyone’s opinions regarding the pair’s abilities. A three count or a submission is all they need to be crowned the brand new Tag Team Champions and for a team with a name like The Violence Institute, they’ll do whatever it takes to ensure they head home as the new champs.

Christopher Saynt vs Jack Morris

While he and fellow Sensational Scenebirds member Darrell Costello were unsuccessful in their attempt at capturing the Tag Team Championships, Christopher Saynt now has the opportunity to make a huge mark in the main event scene as he comes up against the incredibly gifted Jack Morris. Morris defeated Robert Wishart last month, which meant that he now has the chance to challenge for the Heavyweight Championship in November when Respect Pro Wrestling head to the Walker Hall for their anniversary event. The footballer-turned-wrestler has become one of the most talked about up and comers in Scottish wrestling due to his sheer athleticism – if you get on the wrong side of him, expect to be nailed with a shooting star press. Lovely. He’ll need to have eyes on the back of his head on Saturday though, as Darrell Costello will no doubt try and help Saynt come out on top. If he were to win here, you’d have to through Saynt’s name into the hat for a Heavyweight Championship match down the line.

Darrell Costello vs Glen Dunbar

Darrell Costello is also in action as he comes up against Glen Dunbar, a veteran of Scottish wrestling. Costello was brought into Respect Pro last year by Christopher Saynt as they, alongside Emily Hayden, formed The Sensational Scenebirds. The trio have been making a statement for as long as they’ve been on the go, doing anything they possibly can to rise through the ranks. While Costello is recently new to wrestling, Glen Dunbar is quite the opposite, having started his in-ring career all the way back in 2003. Throughout his storied career, The Lowland Superstar has held titles such as the SWA Tag Team Champions and the Scottish Junior Heavyweight Championship (now the Scottish X Championship). In November, he appeared as the guest sherriff for the Bunkhouse Brawl between Aspen Faith and Lewis Girvan, before returning to action last month in a losing effort to Alexander Darwin MacAllan. A bit of a past vs the future vibe with this one – defeating an established veteran such as Glen Dunbar would do incredible things for the young career of Darrell Costello.

Ian Skinner vs Scott McManus

A match that I’m quite looking forward to (hoping they upload it somewhere) is Ian Skinner vs Scott McManus. Both men have similar styles in the ring, with Skinner being a big fan of kicking the living hell out of his opponents (watching Katsuyori Shibata matches always comes in handy) whereas McManus is a master of hap-jitsu, a variation of martial arts. Ian came into Respect Pro in November, teaming with fellow PBW Academy graduate Danny Edwards in a losing effort to The Sensational Scenebirds in a Tag Team Championships Qualifying Match. Even with the loss, The Shooter left it all in the ring that evening. On the other side of the spectrum, Scott was last in Discovery in August, a show that saw him team with Mark J. Wilson as they fell at the feet of MATT DALY and Shaun Walker. He clearly left an impression though, hence this showcase bout with Ian Skinner. In my eyes, both of these young lads are part of the future of Scottish wrestling. They have the in-ring styles to make it far, and the Kilwinning faithful will witness that first-hand come Saturday night!

The Headbanders (Jackie Grady & Rob Mills) vs Mark J. Wilson & ???

In tag team action, The Headbanders are back in Respect Pro facing Mark J. Wilson and a surprise partner. Jackie Grady and Rob Mills were part of a Fatal Four Way Match a few months ago alongside Xero and Nathan North, a match that sounds like it would’ve been fantastic. Both excellent singles performers, they make for quite the tag team, which is likely why they’ve both been recruited to the ranks of Divinity down in Reckless Intent Wrestling (now known as The Enlightened down in that neck of the woods). Don’t worry though Respect Pro fans, they’re still the fun-loving, headband-wearing lads that we all know and love up here. They’re at a disadvantage here though, as they only know who one of their opponents will be. We’ve seen nothing online whatsoever that would indicate who Mark’s partner could possibly be for this match – a good guess would be that it’s someone from Source Wrestling though, perhaps occasional ally Cody Crawford. Who knows though. All will be revealed in a few days time.

Tickets to this event are no longer available as the show has indeed sold out (the power of having The Sensational Scenebirds on the card). Doors open at 6pm, with the first bell at 6:30!
