Preview: Discovery Wrestling ‘Year Five’

October 11th, 2014. Discovery Wrestling hosted their inaugural event at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh. Five years later, they’re now classed as one of the best wrestling promotions in Scotland, mixing together some of the finest talent from around the UK and further afield to ensure the fans receive their money’s worth. Countless memories have been made, numerous match of the year contenders have been held, and stars have been created show after show. One thing that’s remained the same throughout the entirety of Discovery’s tenure has been the fact that they’re all about the wrestling. That’ll be crystal clear as they present their fifth year anniversary show on Sunday night at the Jam House, a show that’s set to feature the likes of Mike Bailey, Veda Scott, and Paul Tracey, as well as a colossal main event as the Y Division Championship is up for grabs!

Y Division Championship
Joe Coffey (c) vs Joe Hendry

A match over two years in the making will finally take place at Year Five as Joe Coffey defends his coveted Y Division Championship against Joe Hendry in a rare NXT UK vs ROH bout. If you recall back to June 2017, Joe Coffey defeated both Aspen Faith and then-Y Division Champion Lewis Girvan to earn another crack at the title. Who was his partner for that match? Joe Hendry. If it wasn’t for the assistance of The Prestigious One in that bout, it’s possible Joe Coffey wouldn’t even be the Y Division Champion right now. Nonetheless though, The Iron King is indeed our champion, and he has been for just over two years. Numerous challengers have stepped up to his throne, and all have been sent to the back of the line. BT Gunn, Matt Riddle, Jordan Devlin, Andy Wild, Aspen Faith, Lewis Girvan, the list goes on. Meanwhile, Joe Hendry has been knocking back challenges in his own right, defeating Timothy Thatcher last November to earn this title match with Coffey, before also defeating Lewis Girvan to retain that position back at July’s Camp Discovery show. It’s been a long-time coming, but now Joe Hendry will finally receive his championship opportunity against Joe Coffey. A huge main event for Discovery’s five year anniversary event.

Discovery Women’s Championship – Elimination Match
Martina (c) vs Angel Hayze vs Sammii Jayne vs Kasey

Ever since capturing the Women’s Championship in the Disco Derby Match back in March, Martina has made it her mission to welcome all challengers to come and try take the gold from her (although she may have been under the influence of alcohol when making this challenge to the women’s division). After a defence against both Ashley Vega and Emily Hayden back in July, The Session Moth now finds herself defending the strap against another three participants in that Disco Derby Match. First up, we have Angel Hayze, a woman who has left a lasting impression since her Disco debut back in January as she eliminated then-champion Sammii Jayne from the Derby and then defeated her in singles competition at Camp Discovery. Secondly, it’s the former champ Sammii Jayne. The Main Event Empress spent 483 days as the Women’s Champion, defeating the likes of Kay Lee Ray, Little Miss Roxxy, and Kris Wolf to remain the champion before being usurped by Martina. Finally, we have Kasey, who firmly believes this should be a one on one contest between her and Martina. She has a fair point, considering it was those two who were the final two participants in Derby that led to Martina’s championship victory. No matter what she wants to believe though, this will be a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match, a staple from Discovery’s five year history.

Pick Your Poison Match
Christopher Saynt vs ??? // Theo Doros vs ???

Since the end of 2018, things haven’t been going too well for The House of Saynt. Tensions between members Theo Doros and Grant McIvor had gotten to the point where they had to face off against each other, with the loser being kicked out of the group. Theo would win that bout to remove Grant from The House of Saynt, but he would then leave the ranks himself, effectively leaving Christopher Saynt as the sole member. Things have only gotten worse between Saynt and Doros ever since, with an Unsanctioned Match at the Disco Derby ending in a no contest as they simply couldn’t stop laying in the damage to one another. Now, we’ve arrived at this point. A Pick Your Poison Match. Christopher Saynt will choose Theo Doros’ opponent, and vice versa. Saynt has already tried to recruit the now-retired Shaun Walker to face The Superior Cypriot to no avail but if I’m placing bets, I’d say he’ll send in one of The Sensational Scenebirds to fend off Doros. But you don’t need to listen to what my prediction is – you can cast your own predictions below!

Sugar Dunkerton vs Jason Reed

One of the more highly-anticipated contests on the card will see Sugar Dunkerton return to Discovery for the first time since killing off Gene Munny as he tangles with Jason Reed. Ever since this one was first announced, both Suge and Jason have been tearing into each other on social media, with Suge’s main point being – who the hell is Jason Reed? Well Suge, here goes nothing… Jason Reed is the current WrestleZone Tri-Counties Champion, Jason Reed is the man who will make wrestling great again, Jason Reed is the man who will lead Scottish wrestling to new heights, Jason Reed is the man full stop. All due respect to Suge, he’s one hell of a talented lad that can do some amazing things when he saunters out to ringside. But will that really be enough to stop Jason? He’s on a mission right now to prove why the entire Scottish wrestling scene needs to keep their eyes peeled on him. This is just another step towards that end goal.

The Kings of Catch (Aspen Faith & Lewis Girvan) vs Revolution (Damien & Johnny Lions)

Seeing as he’s set to retire before the new year rolls in, it was revealed that Johnny Lions would be returning to Discovery Wrestling for their fifth anniversary show. The Tenacious One originally wanted to come back and team with his old Wild Lions partner Andy Wild, but The Dad Bod God is still adamant he doesn’t want to show his face in Discovery again following the loss to Joe Coffey in January. As a result, Lions will team with one of his other former partners as he and Damien reform Revolution to battle The Kings of Catch. Johnny hasn’t appeared for Discovery since September 2016, when he and Jason Reed lost to Dave Conrad and Deviation, but Damien has made a handful of appearances for Discovery since returning in the 2018 Disco Derby Match, most recently teaming with Lewis Girvan at the start of the year in a loss to Chris Brookes and Kid Lykos of CCK. While neither of those two have been regular members of the roster in the last few years, The Kings of Catch have been establishing themselves as the team to beat in Discovery, with victories in the bank over The Kings of the North, The Anti-Fun Police, and The Young Bucks, amongst others. Will Revolution just be another addition to that list, or will Johnny Lions come out on top in his Discovery Wrestling comeback?

Paul Tracey vs Liam Thomson

Without a shadow of a doubt, this will be the wrestling portion of the evening, as Paul Tracey makes his Discovery debut to tangle with “Bad Boy” Liam Thomson. Like a few others on this card, Liam competed on the first ever Disco show in a loss to Martyn Stallyon, and would make sporadic appearances thereafter, with his most recent appearances coming last year as he entered the second annual Hotter Than Hell Edinburgh Invitational Tournament. Following his return from injury last summer, Liam has reclaimed his position as one of Scottish wrestling’s premier talents, being the current ICW Zero-G Champion. Now, The King of Sink Style will collide with Paul Tracey. The Lord of the Manor recently returned to Scottish wrestling a few weeks ago as he faced Joe Coffey at the ICW Fight Club tapings, and he will also be wrestling/coaching at Reckless Intent the day before Year Five. He’s a superb talent, and I’m certain this match with Liam will be up for consideration when it comes to the Year End Awards on January 1st.

BT Gunn vs Mike Bailey

Fresh off his return from a short injury setback, BT Gunn will be stepping into a Discovery ring once again as he battles the returning Mike Bailey. These two actually met last July when Speedball made his Discovery debut, competing on opposite sides of an Intergender Match as Gunn teamed with Kasey and Bailey teamed with fellow debutant Veda Scott. It would be BT Gunn and Kasey who picked up the win that evening, but I’m sure Mike Bailey has been busy since then doing his research to ensure he won’t lose out to The Oddity once again. If it comes down to it, perhaps he’ll focus on Gunn’s injury and use it as an advantage to lead him to a relatively easy victory. Once again in this preview though, this should be another contender for match of the year.

Ashley Vega vs Veda Scott

The last match signed for Year Five will see Ashley Vega tangling with Veda Scott. Ever since she debuted for Discovery in January against fellow Scottish wrestling standout Angel Hayze, Ashley has had quite the journey thus far, having two unsuccessful opportunities at the Women’s Championship in the time that’s followed. Even though she didn’t capture the title on either of those occasions, Ashley proved herself in both of those matches. Now though, she’s faced with another huge opportunity as she battles Veda Scott. The former Absolute Intense Wrestling Women’s and Tag Team Champion is an exceptional athlete, with a victory here in her Discovery return possibly lining her up for a future Women’s Championship opportunity in the future if she happens to come back again further down the line.

As well as all this, WhatCulture personality Simon Miller will be on hand once again as the official event host. Lou King Sharp has promised to give Simon a Pure Dead Brilliant welcome back, alongside Kid Fite and Krieger. Who knows what will happen when Sharp and Miller come face to face once again.

Limited tickets are still available from Discovery Wrestling’s official website, priced at Β£15 for adults, Β£10 for children, and Β£40 for a family ticket. Doors open at 2pm, with the action kicking off at 3pm. Still time to snap up your tickets, and help celebrate five years of Discovery Wrestling!
